Susan’s work covers both contentious and non-contentious issues, with a wide range of clients ranging from public and third sector organisations, including Government Departments and universities to multi-nationals, owner-managed businesses and startups. One particular area of expertise is providing advice and specialised training on data protection and freedom of information responsibilities, and on managing complex data breach, SAR and Freedom of Information Act responses, often against the background of ongoing or prospective litigation. She also advises on online issues such as cyber-bullying and harassment, misuse of social media and online defamation.
She is regularly asked to provide expert commentary by publications including the Times, Financial Times, Telegraph, BBC website, Computer Weekly and national newspapers. Susan is ranked as a Leading Individual for Technology, Media and Telecoms in the North-West (Legal 500) where she is described as having ‘unrivalled legal knowledge and experience’.
Susan has a first-class degree from Oxford, and an LLM from the University of Toronto, where she was a Commonwealth Scholar. She qualified at Linklaters in 1988, and subsequently worked in the London office of Baker & McKenzie before returning to her Northern roots in 1994. She joined Clarke Willmott in 2013 after thirteen years as a partner at Cobbetts LLP/DWF LLP.
