Clarke Willmott’s Southampton office hosted a colourful elephant named Tula as part of an initiative to encourage open conversations about mental health in the workplace.

Tula, which means “balance” in Sanskrit, was named by one of Clarke Willmott’s employees and hand painted by artists from wellbeing organisation Elephant in the Room.

Since then she has been touring the national law firm’s UK offices, encouraging open dialogue around mental health and wellbeing, breaking stigma and bringing the “elephant in the room” into the open.

Richard Swain, office head at Clarke Willmott in Southampton, said: “This is a great way of focusing on something that people can lose sight of in their busy working lives and it has been powerful and moving to hear from colleagues about some of the issues they and their loved ones have faced over the years.”

“Our people are at the heart of everything we do,” added Peter Swinburn, CEO of Clarke Willmott.

“Supporting mental health is central to our values and initiatives like this help us create a culture where everyone feels able to speak openly, support one another and know that it’s okay not to be okay.”

The partnership with Elephant in the Room forms part of Clarke Willmott’s broader commitment to colleague wellbeing, aligning with the firm’s core values.

Its commitment to helping support colleagues’ mental health includes resources available online 24/7, a team of mental health first aiders available in every office and free confidential support available for all from external specialists.

Clarke Willmott is also a member of the Mindful Business Charter, Mindful Employer Charter and has signed the Menopause at Work Pledge and Mental Health at Work Commitment. To learn more about Clarke Willmott’s values visit: Our values – Clarke Willmott LLP
