James excels at quickly getting to grips with the key issues in complex legal and factual disputes and providing commercially pragmatic and easy to understand advice.

James is a Chartered Legal Executive in the Property Litigation team specialising in enfranchisement claims, business rates disputes, termination of residential tenancies and commercial landlord and tenant disputes including lease renewals (opposed and unopposed), forfeiture, dilapidations and breaches and enforceability of covenants, such as rent arrears recovery.

James graduated from the University of Exeter, gaining first class honours in Law before joining Clarke Willmott as a paralegal in May 2017. He has recently completed his training and qualified as a Chartered Legal Executive in October 2020.

James is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Legal Executives.

  • Dilapidations claims including successfully achieving settlement for claimant landlord where s.18 defences are raised;
  • Residential possession claims;
  • Commercial landlord and tenant disputes, including forfeiture, recovery of rent and service charge disputes;
  • Mitigation of business rates liability and defending claims by local authorities in connection with such schemes;
  • Enfranchisement matters, including advising both freeholders facing claims and leaseholders making claims; and
  • Renewals of protected business tenancies, particularly advice to landlords on opposing renewal applications.
