We believe businesses have an important role to play in creating positive change. Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) considerations form an important part of how we operate our business and deliver our legal services.

Our approach extends beyond meeting our compliance obligations. We aim to operate responsibly, reduce our environmental impact, and create lasting value for our people, clients, and the communities we serve.

Environmental responsibility

We’re committed to reducing the environmental impact of our operations and playing our part in addressing climate change. This includes working to reduce carbon emissions and waste, improve energy efficiency and build environmental awareness among our people through initiatives such as Carbon Literacy training and our Climategames Challenge. Through measurable targets and practical action, we are continually working to improve our environmental performance.

By actively working to reduce our impact through both our operations and behaviours, we’ve set measurable goals – validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) – and have already cut Scope 1 and 2 emissions by over 90%, against our 2021/2022 baseline, well ahead of our 2030 goal. We’re continuing to work on our Scope 3 reduction target of 25% by 2030, as part of our wider commitment to achieving net zero by 2040.

Our environmental policy and carbon reduction plan set out our approach, targets, and progress towards net zero. Some examples of actions we have taken include:

We have reviewed our property portfolio and delivered office relocations and refurbishments that have reduced carbon emissions and improved energy efficiency. In 2023, our Bristol office relocated, reducing floorspace by 65% and improving its energy rating from D to EPC A. The office also benefits from the Bristol district heat network. In April 2024, our Cardiff office moved to the city centre, providing greater access to public transport and supporting more sustainable travel choices for our people.

We are committed to reducing emissions and enhancing energy efficiency across all our offices. Currently 97% of our electricity consumption comes from low carbon sources, with 95% from renewable sources and the remainder from nuclear.

  • Our Clarke Willmott Climategames Challenge: 267 colleagues across 28 teams took part in our virtual race around the world in June 2026, logging activities including walking, running, cycling and swimming. Completing the challenge will result in 1,000 trees being planted, combining colleague wellbeing with environmental action.
  • Our Small Change: Big Difference campaign engaged employees across the firm through virtual sessions and a 10-day Sprint, where participants received daily emails and short videos on topics like energy, money, food, and clothing. We also ran a three-month competition between our seven offices focused on reducing energy consumption by encouraging colleagues to switch off monitors when not in use. The campaign was proudly shortlisted for Best ESG Initiative of the Year at the People in Law Awards 2025.
  • We have achieved Bronze Carbon Literate Organisation status, accredited by the Carbon Literacy Project, recognising our commitment to Carbon Literacy and developing a low-carbon culture. Our Carbon Literacy training is being rolled out across the firm, helping colleagues build their understanding of climate change and the actions they can take to reduce emissions.
  • We support the Manchester Carbon Literacy Commitment initiative which brings together people and organisations in Manchester to work collectively towards Carbon Literate Locality status for the city.
  • We have set science-based emissions reduction targets as part of our commitment to achieving net zero by 2040. The Science Based Targets initiative’s provides standards and guidance for science-based climate action, with target validation undertaken through SBTi Services.

Community impact

We actively support our communities through volunteering and partnerships with charities, with a strong focus on improving social mobility. Our work with the Social Mobility Foundation helps young people prepare for the world of work through mentoring, CV and job application support, and employability skills. In addition, each of our seven offices supports local charities, creating meaningful impact within their own communities.
