Renewable energy

Legal specialists for the renewable energy sector

As renewable energy grows in popularity, we are seeing increased governmental regulation and control, as well as complex technological advances.

Our nationally rated renewable energy team takes pride in staying up to date with developments in the industry and has built up vast expertise in the legal requirements of most renewable technologies, including onshore wind, solar, biomass, waste to energy and anaerobic digestion. Our clients include landowners, developers, contractors and funders.

Our renewable energy expertise

We provide a ‘one-stop shop’ for our renewable energy clients, by delivering seamless, sector-focused legal advice on all aspects of renewable energy work. Our advice is based on our established track record in renewable energy projects, our broad perspective and our focus on bringing cost-efficiency to every project.

We work with clients from the very start of a project through to acquisition, financing, construction, regulation, commissioning and connecting to the grid. And our support doesn’t end there; we can continue offering advice once the plants and facilities are up and running.

The team is headed by Priscilla Hall, who has spent 15 years working in this sector. Other team members are renewables specialists from our real estate, real estate finance, construction, corporate, planning, environmental, intellectual property and banking departments.

We pride ourselves on our high levels of service and our ability to ‘think like a client’ when delivering added value. Above all, we focus on building long-standing relationships with our clients, working closely with them to achieve their commercial aims.

Our membership of industry bodies includes RenewableUK and the Renewable Energy Association.

Our renewable energy legal experience in action

Solar – Dillington Estate

The Dillington Estate was structuring and developing a large-scale (9.3MW) solar installation. Our advice and involvement included negotiations with EPC and O&M contractors as well as the funder. We also advised the Estate on the project financing aspects of the transaction and the lease.

Wind – Velocita Energy Developments Ltd

We acted on the drafting and negotiation of the construction contracts for the development of a wind farm in Wales. The wind farm generates 24MW of energy using Siemens turbines. The procurement was multi-contract and involved negotiations with Siemens and UK based civil contractor. We also dealt with negotiations with the funder’s lawyers.

Biogas – EnviTec (UK) Limited

We act for this UK subsidiary of EnviTec AG in relation to the development of biogas plants in the UK. This includes advising them on site acquisition, option agreements, freehold transfer and long lease, all due diligence aspects, advice in relation to feedstock agreements, finance arrangements and construction documentation. We have also advised them on connection requirements, as the plants are gas to grid as well as including CHP units to enable the generation of electricity.
