Leading national law firm Clarke Willmott has reinforced its commitment to tackling climate change by participating in a full day of Carbon Literacy training in its Manchester office on 13th November, as part of Carbon Literacy Action Day – the national initiative led by The Carbon Literacy Project.

Manchester is the only city in the UK to have made a formal Carbon Literacy pledge. Clarke Willmott has proudly joined the initiative, committing to support the city’s drive for greater carbon awareness. The firm’s session in Manchester marks its first Carbon Literacy training in the city, and is part of a series of internal training sessions aimed at embedding sustainable thinking across the business.

This session builds on Clarke Willmott’s recent achievement of Bronze Carbon Literate Organisation status, awarded by the Carbon Literacy Project. It also complements the firm’s broader sustainability initiatives, including the publication of its Carbon Reduction Plan, which sets a verified Net Zero target for 2040 covering energy, travel, waste and commuting emissions. Practical measures already in place include energy-efficient offices, renewable electricity, and digital-first ways of working.

Karen Higgins, Head of ESG at Clarke Willmott, said: “Carbon literacy is about understanding how our actions contribute to carbon emissions and knowing how to make meaningful reductions at an individual and organisational level. Participating in Carbon Literacy Action Day allows our teams to continually strengthen that understanding, ensuring sustainable thinking is embedded across all areas of our work. Our journey to Net Zero by 2040 is supported by clear science-based targets, innovative office redesigns, and the active engagement of our people.”

Sojan Johny, Housing Coordinator at The Carbon Literacy Project, said: “It’s fantastic to see Clarke Willmott leading by example through developing and delivering Carbon Literacy training internally at their Manchester office on 13th November, aligning perfectly with Carbon Literacy Action Day (CLAD). This global day of climate education and action highlights the power of informed individuals to drive meaningful change. Manchester’s ambition to become the world’s first Carbon Literate City is both a bold and inspiring commitment, and we’re proud to support organisations like Clarke Willmott who are contributing to making this vision a reality.”

By actively participating in initiatives like Carbon Literacy Action Day, Clarke Willmott demonstrates that it is not only achieving recognition for carbon literacy but also embedding sustainability into its culture, operations and client services.
