We believe in the power of positive change. That’s why Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) principles are embedded in everything we do, from our operations to our legal services.

Our commitment goes beyond compliance. We aim to build a responsible business, reduce our environmental impact, and create lasting value for our people and the communities we serve.

Environmental responsibility

We’re committed to protecting the planet and tackling climate change by reducing our carbon footprint, cutting waste and promoting sustainability. From energy efficient offices to raising awareness among our people, we’re taking action today for a better tomorrow.

By actively working to reduce our impact through both our operations and behaviours we’ve set measurable goals, verified by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), and have already cut Scope 1 and 2 emissions by over 50% well ahead of our 2030 goal. We’re continuing to work to on our Scope 3 reduction of 25% by 2030.

Our environmental policy and carbon reduction plan outlines our commitment to net zero. Some examples of actions we have taken to make a positive difference include:

Reviewed our property portfolio leading to reduced carbon emissions through smaller footprints and energy efficient solutions. In 2023, our Bristol office moved, cutting floorspace by 65% and improving our energy rating from D to EPC A, while utilising the Bristol district heat network. Our Cardiff office relocated in April 2024 to the city centre, enhancing public transport access and promoting sustainable travel for employees.

Energy efficiency – we are committed to reducing emissions and enhancing energy efficiency across all our offices. Currently 92.8% of our electricity consumption comes from low carbon sources.

Our Small Change: Big Difference campaign engaged employees across the firm through virtual sessions and a 10-day Sprint, where participants received daily emails and short videos on topics like energy, money, food, and clothing. We also ran a three-month competition between our seven offices to see who could save the most energy by switching off monitors. The campaign was proudly shortlisted for Best ESG Initiative of the Year at the People in Law Awards 2025.

  • Awarded Bronze Carbon Literate Organisation status by the Carbon Literacy Project. A recognition of our commitment to building climate awareness and action across the firm. Our Carbon Literacy training is being rolled out company wide. This accreditation reflects our dedication to empowering our people with the knowledge and motivation to reduce emissions and support a low carbon future.
  • Manchester Carbon Literacy Commitment – an initiative that brings together individuals and organisations in Manchester to achieve Carbon Literate Locality status for the city.
  • Proud members of Science Based Targets initiative’s (SBTi) ‘Business Ambition for 1.5 C (degree)’ campaign. Working to join global efforts to halve emissions by 2030 and align with climate science. The SBTi is spearheading this campaign in a partnership with CDP, the UN Global Compact, World Resources Institute (WRI), and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF).
  • Manchester’s Good Landlord Charter. The Greater Manchester Good Landlord Charter is a pioneering initiative to improve rental standards for private and social tenants. The Good Landlord Charter was launched by Mayor Andy Burnham and the Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA). It is run by an independent Implementation Unit delivered by TDS.

Community impact

We actively support our communities through volunteering and partnerships with charities, with a strong focus on improving social mobility. Our work with the Social Mobility Foundation helps young people prepare for the world of work through mentoring, CV and job application support, and employability skills. In addition, each of our seven offices supports local charities, creating meaningful impact within their own communities.
