This weekend, members of our fertility and family law team attended The Fertility Show London, one of the UK’s leading events for individuals, couples and professionals involved in fertility treatment and modern family building.

The event brought together clinics, counsellors, charities, legal professionals and intended parents, creating an important opportunity for open conversations about the realities of fertility treatment, donor conception and surrogacy.

A number of themes stood out from this year’s event:

1. Patients are increasingly proactive and informed

Many intended parents attending the show had already undertaken extensive research before speaking with professionals.

There is clearly growing awareness around:

  • Donor conception pathways
  • International fertility treatment
  • Egg freezing
  • Surrogacy
  • Fertility preservation
  • LGBTQ+ family building

Alongside this increased awareness, there also appears to be greater recognition that legal advice forms an important part of the process.

2. International treatment remains a significant area of interest

There were many conversations around overseas fertility treatment and international surrogacy arrangements.

While these pathways can provide opportunities for intended parents, they can also create legal complexities involving immigration, citizenship and recognition of parenthood in the UK.

One of the key takeaways from the event was the importance of obtaining specialist advice before entering into international arrangements.

3. Fertility professionals increasingly value multidisciplinary support

Another noticeable trend was the growing emphasis on collaborative support between clinics and other professionals.

Fertility journeys often involve medical, emotional, financial and legal considerations simultaneously. Increasingly, clinics and patients appear to value joined-up professional support that helps individuals navigate the process more confidently.

4. Conversations around surrogacy reform continue

There was also continued discussion around whether UK surrogacy law requires modernisation.

Many intended parents remain surprised by the current legal framework, particularly the fact that intended parents are not automatically recognised as legal parents at birth.

Legal reform remains an area of significant interest within the fertility sector and will no doubt continue to evolve.
