Net zero plan: Our commitment to reducing our carbon emissions

Clarke Willmott LLP is committed to achieving full net zero emissions by the end of 2035. This will be done in a phased and planned approach.

As we further develop a detailed understanding of Scope 3 emissions along with the long-term impact of home working, we will aim to accelerate our commitment of achieving net zero before the end of 2035. Our aspiration is to achieve net zero for Scopes 1 & 2 by 2030 and Scope 3 by 2035.

Our strategic plan

The impact on Covid-19 has been significant for Clarke Willmott in developing our net zero plan. The majority of our people are choosing or being asked to work from home, a situation which will continue into 2022. Moving forward we are adopting a hybrid working approach, which will evolve over the next two years.

Scope 1 & 2 emissions

Our strategy for Scope 1 & 2 reductions has been split into two different but interconnected streams.

  • Property portfolio
  • Remote working

Property portfolio – In 2020, we started actively reviewing our property portfolio of seven offices to move to more energy efficient and smaller offices reflecting occupancy demand and environmental considerations. We are pleased that we relocated to new offices in Birmingham in August 2021 and have plans to relocate our office in Bristol during 2023.

In addition, we have started a process of works to lower emissions from all of our offices and make them increasingly energy efficient. A major refurbishment of our Taunton office is underway and will be complete in or around May 2022.

Remote working – The second stream is to work with our people who are predominantly working remotely on a permanent basis. We will be engaging with each of these individuals to gain a greater understanding of their energy requirements and usage. In parallel, we have started reviewing our HR policies to encourage those staff who will work from home to change their behaviours and buying patterns through incentives and suggestions.

EIC has been commissioned to complete the ESC report for May 21 to April 22 for progress reporting and recommendations.

Scope 3 emissions

Our strategy for Scope 3 reductions is being driven by the managing director of Clarke Willmott’s Property Services Division. Their role is to chair our Green Steering Group to lead and develop a more detailed analysis of our Scope 3 emissions, with support from external consultants. Our plan is to appoint a specialist environmental consultancy to help create a framework to start a full supply chain audit. This will create an initial five-year strategy to capture information and start reducing emissions in line with our overall plan to become net zero. The five-year strategy will be published by July 2022.

As part of our overall approach, two strategic projects that incorporate environmental aspects are underway. Outputs and impacts will be fed back into Green Steering Group as part of the wider Scope 3 strategy for:

Print, post and reprographics – In 2021 we initiated a strategic project to simplify, streamline and digitise the print, post and reprographic aspects of Clarke Willmott’s operations. This project will be progressed during 2022 and its impact will be more fully understood by mid-2022.

Travel – As a result of the Coronavirus pandemic, travel to our offices by our staff and clients has been reduced dramatically (over 90%). As we emerge form Covid restrictions we are adopting a “digital first” approach to the majority of our meetings. An integral part of this will be reviewing and updating our HR policies to ensure environmental considerations are imbedded in to travel decision making. It is anticipated this review and consultation will be completed by Q3 2022.

Our IT Strategy is also expected to yield carbon reduction opportunities. For example, we seek to move more services to the Cloud from physical hosting in our data centre. Further analysis to evaluate the carbo reduction benefits of these IT projects will be incorporated in future updates to this plan.

Supporting the steering group will be our Green Action team with at least one representative from each office. Their focus will be on operational environmental activities to reduce Scope 1,2 & 3 emissions alongside the environmental objectives of each individual at Clarke Willmott.

We project that overall property carbon emissions will decrease by 50% by 2025 as a result of the various projects we have underway.

Our Baseline Year data is based on analysis used in the production of:

  • The Clarke Willmott Energy Industries Council (EIC) Streamlined Energy & Carbon (ESC) Report May 20 – May 21 Scope 1 & 2 emissions
  • Estimated Scope 1 & 2 emissions for home working between May 20 – May 21
  • Estimated Scope 3 emissions data based on earlier analysis and reports of our business operations, specifically the Legal Sustainability Alliance Environment Report 2017 and the Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme (ESOS) Report 2018

Our Baseline Year also represents our current reporting year. We will produce and publish our next Net Zero Plan – Annual Carbon Reduction Report for the year 2021/22 along with our annual results for the financial year May 2021 – April 2022. This report will be published no later than August 2022.
