Advice from a past participant, April Coslett

Our Summer Vacation Scheme offers a unique opportunity to experience the day-to-day life of working at Clarke Willmott. To help future applicants prepare with confidence, one of our 2025 participants, April Coslett, has shared her experience and the advice she wishes she had received when she first applied.

With applications now open for this year’s Summer Vacation Scheme, we hope April’s advice below helps you feel more prepared and confident as you put your application together.

1. Start with meaningful research

Before you begin structuring or writing your application, invest time in thoroughly researching the firm. April admits that when first encountering vacation schemes, she “essentially went in blind”, but quickly learned the importance of preparation.

Beyond the website, explore Clarke Willmott’s LinkedIn, Instagram, and recent news. This broader view helps you understand our culture, values, and work. Review articles, case insights, and social posts that genuinely spark your interest.

Those reading your application want to see that effort. Tailored, thoughtful responses demonstrate not only your interest in the firm but your ability to conduct meaningful, in‑depth research which is a core skill for any aspiring lawyer.

April’s top tip:

“Create a dedicated Clarke Willmott folder on your desktop. Save useful articles, case studies, and social media posts so you can easily reference them later when drafting your answers.”

2. Use AI wisely – don’t let it speak for you

April notes that AI tools can be useful when used correctly. They can help you organise ideas, structure responses or support your research. However, you must always check that any information is accurate and relevant.

April’s top tip:

“Most importantly, your answers should remain your own. Clarke Willmott wants to get to know the real you so make sure the responses supported are your own.”

3. Revise and practice

Interviews usually take place a few weeks after application deadlines. April recommends revisiting your application before the interview to remind yourself of the examples you used, the firm specific details you included and your reasoning behind key points.

It is also helpful to prepare for questions beyond the scope of your written application. Practising answers to commonly used interview questions can help you feel more confident and structured in your responses.

April’s top tip:

“Make a list of past achievements and situations where you demonstrated skills such as adaptability, communication, teamwork and critical thinking. Refer to this list during your interview preparation.”

4. Be yourself

Trust in your preparation, and most importantly, trust in yourself! – This tip may seem overused, but it genuinely matters. Being authentically yourself throughout the application process helps you communicate your motivations clearly and allows the firm to understand how you naturally think and approach challenges.

5. April’s final top tip

“Approach each stage with confidence, belief in your abilities and a clear demonstration of your passion for the firm and for a career in law. These qualities are invaluable, and they are exactly what Clarke Willmott will be looking out for.”
