Clarke Willmott has today announced that it has been accredited as a Bronze Carbon Literate Organisation, underlining the firm’s commitment to tackling climate change, reducing organisational carbon emissions and working towards a zero-carbon future.
Carbon Literacy is defined as “an awareness of the carbon costs and impacts of everyday activities, and the ability and motivation to reduce emissions, on an individual, community and organisational basis.” It is built around a day’s worth of learning and action on climate change, empowering people and organisations to make practical, measurable changes.
The firm began its Carbon Literacy journey as part of its wider environmental and social responsibility strategy, recognising the urgent need for climate action in the legal sector. This knowledge-sharing approach is helping to embed sustainability awareness into the organisation’s culture and decision-making.
As part of this journey, Clarke Willmott has also committed to Manchester Carbon Literacy City. This commitment demonstrates the firm’s pledge to support the City of Manchester in the collective endeavour to become a Carbon Literate City. Clarke Willmott will publicly declare and contribute the number of its Carbon Literate people towards the city-wide target, and will collaborate with colleagues, citizens, organisations and enterprises across Manchester to learn and take material action on climate change through Carbon Literacy, helping deliver the city’s zero carbon objectives.
Clarke Willmott’s Bronze accreditation marks an important milestone in its journey towards greater sustainability. The firm plans to continue building on this achievement by expanding training opportunities and engaging with clients and communities on low-carbon initiatives.
The team will celebrate the accreditation at a ceremony in Manchester in 2026, a city in which the firm has seen continued growth. Launched in 2010, the national firm’s Manchester base is now home to a full-service team of more than 70. In its latest results, Clarke Willmott reported increased profits and pushed turnover up close to the £65m mark and the Manchester office contributed to this success, welcoming several new partners and recognising outstanding internal talent.
Karen Higgins, Head of ESG at Clarke Willmott, said: “This accreditation reflects our deep commitment to embedding climate awareness into every layer of our organisation. Through training, we’re equipping people with the knowledge to act on climate change and take meaningful action.”
Ed Foulkes, partner and Head of Manchester, added: “It’s fantastic that this recognition will be celebrated in Manchester next year. It not only reflects the progress we’ve made as a firm, but also strengthens our commitment to the region, to our colleagues, and to our clients. Sustainability is a key focus for us, and this milestone supports both our office goals and the city’s wider ambition to achieve a zero-carbon future.”
