Martin is a Partner in the Financial Services Litigation team. He specialises in high-value and complex commercial disputes.

He has experience across a broad range of actions with expertise, in particular, in the financial sector advising on contractual disputes, misrepresentation claims and negligence, including professional negligence (claims brought against solicitors, barristers, accountants, and insurance brokers). He has wide experience of UK High Court proceedings, as well as tribunal hearings, government inquiries and ADR (including mediation). He has experience of both Claimant and Defendant side work.

Martin has acted for a variety of domestic and international clients, including high net worth individuals, hedge funds, FMCG manufacturers, telecommunications companies and other utility providers.

Martin trained, qualified and practised for ten years in the City of London at Freshfields LLP and Stewarts, before moving to Acuity in Cardiff. Whilst at Freshfields, Martin also spent six months on secondment at the Bank of England’s Legal Unit, and the firm’s Berlin office.

Experience

  • Advised hedge fund investors in a leading professional negligence case in the Commercial Court and the Court of Appeal, concerning the duty of care of banks to third parties (the Golden Belt litigation), also concerning Islamic financing and the placement of a Sukuk by BNP Paribas (link to case summary here).
  • Represented over 100 individual claimants in a high profile professional negligence class action against a number of defendants (Including barristers and financial advisers) in respect of advice given in respect of a failed film finance tax scheme.
  • Advised a hedge fund on a professional negligence claim against a City law firm for imperfect registration of security in a loan arrangement.
  • Advised a group of former shareholders on the defence of a multimillion-pound arbitration at the London Court of International Arbitration following a post-acquisition warranty claim.
  • Advised on and secured various out of court settlements for high net worth individuals from investment advisors and solicitors.
