Our latest Lexcel report: what our people said

We always look forward to our full Lexcel assessment, which takes place every three years, and this year was no exception. Receiving independent, objective and comprehensive feedback is a much-welcomed opportunity for us to take stock as a firm. It helps us deepen our understanding of where we are most successful as a legal practice and where we need to focus our efforts for continual improvement.

Despite huge changes in the way we work since the beginning of 2020, our recent assessment was our most positive to date. The assessor said: “This has been an excellent review with a high level of compliance against the Lexcel standard. There are many areas of good practice highlighted in this report including the excellent leadership in relation to handling the move to remote working, people management practices and the level of supervision and support available to staff.”

Our Lexcel report is the result of the hard work of all our staff. We know that as a firm we are only as good as our people, and that a happy and engaged workforce will go above and beyond for clients and colleagues.

Our senior leadership team puts significant resource into understanding what is important to our people and responding to their feedback. We’re proud that our efforts are paying off and share below some of what our staff told the assessor about some key areas:

The benefits of working from home

  • “Home working has brought the division closer together; we interact more – a much more joined up approach.”
  • “I’m more involved. I am in a different office to the rest of the team. Previously discussions would have just taken place in the other office, but now I am involved in everything.”
  • “I have built more personal relationships with clients who are also working from home.”
  • “I have learnt more from home – supervisors make an effort to speak to us each day – I’ve learnt a lot in 15 months.”
  • “It is easier to engage with the senior members of client teams.”

Wellbeing

  • “They take great care of the employees and their welfare.”
  • “I feel my opinion is valued and taken on board.”
  • “They are really good here at helping us find our own work-life balance.”

Career progression

  • “My supervisor is very supportive in discussing the criteria for progression and the way forward.”
  • “Management is interested in your growth and progression – helps with motivation if constantly moving.”
  • “Feel they really value us and want us to progress.”

Culture

  • “I love how there are proper structures, and we are all shown how to do things properly.”
  • “We are always able to raise problems. It’s very compliant here. There is not a blame culture, more a focus on how to avoid the issue next time around.”
  • “All very open here. Can always go to the partners – (they’re) very approachable and have a measured approach.”
  • “The culture is open and friendly like a family almost. Not what you expect from a law firm!”
  • “It’s a culture of achievement – it’s why I joined.”
  • “It’s more focused on inclusion than I have seen elsewhere.”
  • “You definitely have a voice here.”

We are always on the lookout for people to join our team. If you’d like to know more about working at Clarke Willmott, please visit our careers pages or view our current vacancies.
