Paralegal – Construction – Manchester
Due to growth and expanding workloads, our Contentious Construction team has a new opportunity for a Paralegal to provide proactive and professional support to fee earners in the team. This is an excellent opportunity for a law graduate, ideally with an LPC to develop their legal career with us.
Hours: Full Time
Vacancy Reference: 569-PMR
As part of our team, you will get involved in high quality, complex, advisory adjudication and litigation work within a supportive and friendly team.
As a paralegal, you will assist in achieving the best results for our clients by resolving disputes before they escalate into formal proceedings. Whilst recognising that not all disputes can be solved at the outset, you will look at providing practical, commercial advice and applying the legal tools available of alternative dispute resolution.
It is intellectually challenging and demanding work, requiring a high degree of attention to detail and the ability to interpret and apply legal principles. You will need to process complex information under (often tight) time constraints to give accurate (and practical) advice in plain English to colleagues and clients.
You will also be involved in business development activities which may involve preparation of marketing literature and attendance at client seminars and other events.
This is a busy and exciting role, with deadlines to manage and competing priorities, so you will be required to work quickly, accurately and efficiently and remain calm under pressure. You will be expected to use your initiative as much as possible and think ahead to meet the needs of the other fee earners and our clients.
You will also be involved in administrative/secretarial activities both for your fee earners and others as required, which will include assisting with billing, file opening and closing, expenses forms, handling telephone enquiries from clients and referrers, diary management and making travel arrangements.
We are looking for someone with a passion for this type of work in whom we can invest on a long term basis.
Based in our Manchester office, you will be joining a team of eight (Administration Assistant, Legal Assistant, two Paralegals, Solicitor, Associate and an External Consultant) who are led by our Partner, James Driver. Our national Construction team also has presence in Bristol, Southampton, Birmingham and London; focussing on a range of non-contentious and contentious projects.
You will be joining a well-regarded team, with a unique offering combining an English and Spanish specialism in construction and engineering law. Our wider and diverse team are also experienced in all forms of construction dispute resolution from a variety of sectors including renewable energy, local governments and social housing.
It is an integral part of this role that you comply with information security and all firm policies and procedures.
You should be able to demonstrate a solid level of academic achievement and have completed a university degree (or equivalent), ideally achieving a 2.1. Ideally, you would then have gone on to study the LPC.
This role will suit you if you like to prioritise your own workload, work closely to deadlines, and can work with minimum supervision and under pressure. You will need to demonstrate from experience that you are exceptionally organised and proactive, with a can-do attitude, and that you have the skills to work closely with various stakeholders and have direct contact with clients.
We expect you to be someone who takes pride in your work and in providing a first class service to your fee earners, anticipating their needs in advance wherever possible and using your initiative to overcome obstacles and suggest improvements.
Paying meticulous attention to detail in all of your work, you will have excellent spelling and grammar and ideally, experience of audio typing. You will be proficient with the usual Microsoft packages, including Excel and PowerPoint, and comfortable with learning new databases and other software packages.
