Birmingham and Bristol amongst the highest rates of cyclist accidents per head of population
National law firm Clarke Willmott LLP Partner Philip Edwards has welcomed the Government’s extension of the successful THINK! Cycle safety Campaign.
The campaign will include a further seven cities with high cyclist causalities figures, alongside those where it is already established, including Birmingham and Bristol.
Think! uses a series of practical tips to remind motorists and cyclists of the rules of the road, and the actions they can take to help reduce accidents.
For the first time the campaign will run in Bradford, Brighton and Hove, Kingston-upon-Hull, Newcastle, Portsmouth, Southampton and Liverpool and for the third consecutive year in in Birmingham, Bristol, Cambridge, Leeds and Manchester, where statistics show the highest rates of traffic collisions involving cyclists compared to the population.
Clarke Willmott supports Birmingham City Council’s Smarter Choices team initiatives helping people make smarter, safer travel choices, including the proposed 20mph speed limit zones as well as installing ‘Trixi’ mirrors at key junctions to help eliminate blind spots for heavy goods vehicles.
Philip Edwards, Partner and serious injury expert, says:
“We are totally behind the expansion of the THINK! Cycle Safety Campaign. There is still a lot of work to be done as accidents per population in Birmingham are still amongst the highest and so there needs to be a joined up approach to reducing risk.
“All too often I see the devastating consequences when a family loses a loved one, or someone suffers life changing injuries as a result of a road collision. The high number of preventable accidents which lead to these events remains a national scandal. Anything which changes the culture on our roads, and results in less of these tragic and avoidable deaths and injuries deserves support“
