Kerry Fifield presenting Amanda Richardson; CEO of PACE with a cheque for £1100

On 11 March the Clinical Negligence and Personal Injury team hosted a Paediatric Brain Injury training Day in the Bristol office. The event was organised by Kerry Fifield; and chaired by Martin Pettingell.

The day raised over £1,300 for children’s charity PACE, which provides innovative education for life for children with sensory motor disorders.

The event included a varied and interesting mix of topics by Amanda Richardson; CEO of PACE, Julian Picton QC at Hailsham Chambers, Renee McCarter; Neuropsychologist, Heather Epps; Neurophysiotherapist.

David Lawson and Amelia Walker; Barristers at Hardwicke Chambers addressed the proposed changes to Statement of Special Educational Needs as a result of the Children and Families Act 2014 which takes effect from September 2014.  The new law will introduce an education, health and care plan, which offers a more holistic approach to supporting children with special education needs and their parents.

Anthony Fairweather; Partner at Clarke Willmott also provided an insight into the role of the Deputy and Court of Protection when assisting families of brain injured children.

The day was well attended by over 50 case managers, therapists and local charities.  We received very positive feedback from the event and it is hoped that a similar event will be planned in the future.

Martin Pettingell, said:

Bringing together experts from the fields of law and medicine to discuss the challenges children with special educational needs and brain injury face is imperative in understanding the opportunities available to improve their quality of life and long-term social and healthcare.

PACE were very grateful for the money raised and the opportunity to raise their profile in relation to the opportunities that they can offer children with complex needs.  Ian Sansbury; Finance Director sent an e-mail after the event:

“Many thanks indeed for the warm hospitality you showed us on Tuesday. It was an excellent and very informative event. And many thanks also for nominating us as the beneficiary charity for the event, which as well as being financially beneficial was great in terms of helping to grow our profile.”
