Department for Work and Pensions revises advice on fit notes

Employers often have to rely on information provided by doctors in sick notes regarding the health of their employees. The government have recently released guidance on how to use sick notes to their full potential. It is also hoped to allow patients to return to the workplace as soon possible. The emphasis should be placed on what an employee CAN do rather than what they can’t.

Sick notes are intended to provide information on the employee’s general fitness for work rather than only the information that relates to their current role. This would allow changes to be made to their job role based on their ability.

Further the guidance suggests that if an employer requires a doctors opinion on the first 7 calendar days of an employee’s sickness it is the employer’s responsibility to organise and pay for it.
