Spire Parkway Solihull Hospital sees second major patient recall

The findings of the independent inquiry into convicted breast surgeon Ian Paterson who worked at the private Spire Parkway Hospital, Solihull are imminent with the report due in early February 2020.

It has therefore come as a surprise and shock that another group of patients whose care was under the same hospital are now being recalled for review by an independent consultant.

The patients were treated by Mr Rahman, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon and underwent shoulder surgery, manipulation under anaesthetic under his care. In all, 217 of those treated have been recalled.

Spire Parkway has now withdrawn his full practising privileges but he continues to care for patients under his NHS practice with University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust under interim restrictions.

It is a worrying time for these former Spire Parkway patients who may be told that the treatment they underwent, including surgery and general anaesthetic, was not required.

It is all the more concerning that this is a large cohort of patients who appear to have been offered similar procedures and treatments and who are now being told that they were not required. It sounds like nothing has been learnt from what went wrong at the same hospital with Mr Paterson.

In addition NHS money was used to fund some of these patients as the NHS outsourced their care and referred them into the private sector meaning that taxpayers’ money has been used to fund payments to this surgeon.

Our Clinical Negligence partner, Marguarita Tyne commented:

‘For too long there has been a lack of accountability in the private medical sector. I hope that fundamental change is imminent and that in the future that there will be a clear structure in place. Patients should no longer be put at risk through a lack of governance in this sector and there should be much better oversight of practice with patient safety and not the profit of the hospitals, medical insurers and individual doctors being of overriding importance.’
