We understand that the breakdown of a relationship can be one of the most traumatic events in a person’s life. It is not simply the fact that the relationship is over and a partnership has come to an end, but also the consequences of that breakdown, be it on children, business or personal finances. We provide advice tailored to each individual, which protects their interests but is also pragmatic and sensible.
We can also advise on mitigating the financial consequences of a relationship breakdown by offering expert advice at the outset or during a relationship to give clarity as to the consequences of that separation. We can prepare prenuptial, pre-registration or cohabitation agreements, as well as post nuptial or registration agreements, and give advice on more complex asset ownership structures designed to give certainty on separation or divorce.
As well as conventional representation, we have trained collaborative lawyers within our team, who can, if the case is suitable, assist in working with both parties and their lawyers without court proceedings to reach a settlement.
We pride ourselves on providing the highest level of specialist service to our clients, and all our team are specialists in this field. In particular, we are acclaimed as leaders in the field of family law in Chambers Guide with four team members identified as leading individuals. We were also named as Private Client and Family Team of the Year at the prestigious 2008 Legal Week awards. The team has particular expertise in family work involving asset protection, insolvency, international issues, and property disputes between unmarried partners.
Our clients come from throughout the UK and abroad, and we benefit from the wider private client expertise in tax, trusts, company and property structures, and pensions. The department has particular experience in acting for professionals, high net worth individuals, those with business interests and those in the sports and agricultural sectors, most notably acting in the landmark case of White v White heard in the House of Lords.
